SUstainable Management in EXtractive Industries

The reduction of ecological effects from mining activities is a central concern to the EU.

Ensuring a sustainable extraction of minerals requires that interest groups of industry, government, academia, and civil society in the entire EU bundle their forces.

The EU-financed SUMEX project develops a sustainability framework for the raw materials extracting industry in Europe.

The framework is applicable across the entire raw materials extracting value chain in order to analyse raw materials deposits and the relevant economic, ecological, and socio-political conditions of the EU and its Member States, besides selected regions. Socio-economic and ecological impact assessments, the land utilisation planning, health and safety, the transmission of official statistics, and the approval processes besides political integration are the central topics.
